About
Why Income Tax e-Filing Needs a DSC
The Income Tax Department allows returns and forms to be verified either through Aadhaar OTP / EVC or through a registered Digital Signature Certificate. For certain categories of taxpayers, using a DSC isn’t a matter of convenience — it’s a statutory requirement. Explore our full range of DSC services for GST, MCA, and DGFT filings too.
Legally equivalent to a wet signature
A Class 3 DSC gives your electronically filed return, audit report, or reply to a notice the same legal standing as a physically signed and stamped document, as recognised under the Information Technology Act, 2000.
One-time registration, ongoing use
Once your DSC is registered against your PAN on the income tax e-filing portal, you can reuse it every assessment year — for ITR filing, audit reports, and any notice responses — until the certificate expires.
Who Must Use DSC
Is DSC Mandatory for Your Filing?
DSC-based verification is compulsory for some categories of taxpayers, and optional (in place of Aadhaar OTP/EVC) for others.
📨
Mandatory
Companies filing ITR-6
Every company is required to verify its Income Tax Return using a Class 3 Organisation DSC — Aadhaar OTP/EVC is not an available option.
🖥️
Mandatory
Taxpayers liable to tax audit
Individuals, firms, and LLPs whose accounts require a tax audit under Section 44AB must verify their return and audit report with a DSC.
📳
Mandatory
Political parties & certain trusts
Political parties and specified trusts/institutions filing returns under audit provisions are also required to use DSC-based verification.
👤
Optional
Individual taxpayers (not under audit)
Salaried individuals and other taxpayers not liable to audit can e-verify via Aadhaar OTP or net banking, or choose an Individual DSC instead.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is DSC compulsory for filing my Income Tax Return?
It depends on your taxpayer category. Companies and taxpayers liable to tax audit must use a DSC; other individuals can choose between DSC, Aadhaar OTP, or net banking-based e-verification.
Should I buy Individual, Organisation, or Combo/DGFT DSC?
Use Individual DSC for personal ITR filing. Use Organisation DSC if you’re filing ITR-6 for a company or LLP. Use Combo/DGFT DSC if your business also files Form 15CA/15CB or handles DGFT/ICEGATE filings.
What happens if my DSC expires before I file my return?
You won’t be able to sign with an expired certificate, so it’s best to renew before expiry — especially ahead of filing deadlines when demand for issuance is high.
Do I need to install any software to sign on the income tax portal?
Yes — the portal requires the emSigner utility to be installed on your computer so it can detect your USB token and complete the signing process in the browser.
Can I use the same DSC for GST and Income Tax filing?
Yes — the same Class 3 Individual or Organisation DSC can be registered and used across GSTN, the income tax portal, and MCA21, as long as your PAN matches on each platform.
